Neck Lift

Do I need a neck lift or is neck lift surgery right for me? You may want to consider neck lift surgery if you have excess fat or wrinkles on your neck or if your neck is starting to resemble a turkeys neck.

There are two types of neck lift surgery:

1. Cervicoplasty- is the procedure that removes excessive skin
2. Platysmaplasty- procedure that removes or alters neck muscles.

Your surgeon will help you choose which one will suits your needs the best. There are other options that alter the appearance of the neck like Botox or liposuction. It depends on the individual and their aesthetic goals to determine what operation they should get.

If you end up getting the neck lift, the actual procedure will take two to three hours. The time varies depending on the operation and the patient. During the procedure the patient will be put under general anesthesia so they will be asleep during the surgery. Paying for the surgery will probably have to be out of pocket. All insurance carriers are different, but they usually do not cover cosmetic surgery. So you will either need to save up for the procedure or set up a payment plan with your doctor. Cosmetic surgery may affect your future insurance coverage, so you should get in touch with your insurance company to let them know you are having a neck lift operation. It would be important to know how the surgery may change conditions of your plan.

Before the surgery you will need to make some big life changes to prepare yourself for the operation. Your doctor will instruct you on what medication and vitamins you should not take. Some medications have blood thinning properties that you will not want in your system during an operation.

If you have been looking for a reason to quit smoking, this may be a good time. Two week before and after the operation you cannot smoke. You can not just cut back, you need to quit altogether.

After the operation you will need to take a week off work, so you should let your manager or boss know before the surgery that you will be out of work.

Once you get home from the surgery you will need to take care of yourself to recuperate, cosmetic surgery is no joke. You will need ice packs, anti-bacterial ointment, access to a phone and pillows. Do not forget to set up some entertainment for yourself such as books, a television and/or computer. It is also recommended to have a friend with you for the first twenty four hours after the surgery to make sure that you do not have any problems.

Recovery will take some time. Generally you can return to work within two week. If you participate in any physical activities such as sports, exercise, etc- you will not be able to resume these for three weeks or more.
